Hasui 巴水: In the Snow, Nakayama Hichiri Road, Hida
A village is tucked in for the evening, the homes looking cozy and warm despite the thickly blowing snow. We see a dark sky, white and grey mauntains and fields, and at bottom a deep blue river. Narazaki wrote: “Hasui undertook an extensive trip lasting 102 days, traveling from the Koshu to the Kiso roads and then on to Hida Takayama [in Gifu prefecture]. The nakayama-shichiiri road appears early on in his sketches from this journey.... The distant mountains are printed without contour lines, conveying thse sense that they are being buried under the heavy snow” With the seal used by Watanabe between 1932 and 1941.
