The Hold-Up, Second State
George Wesley Bellows (1882-1925): lithograph, 1923, 282 x 220 mm., Bellows 13, Mason 189 ii/ii. Very fine, fresh impression on laid china paper with full margins, the impress of the stone and the drying creases still evident, signed in pencil and signed also by the printer Bolton Brown. While Mason catalogs two states of the print, the original Bellows catalog gives separate numbers to the two. The second state is by far the more effective and Mason's edition of 29 appears to cover both states. The image, which is the very essence of Ashcan art is based on Bellows' own painting, but it is his own reinterpretation of the subject.
